My wife is pregnant, and I'm a little worried.
Before bed, I scroll through a parenting forum and come across an anonymous post.
"My husband won't let me have my male best friend's baby. Is this a serious violation of my reproductive rights?"
The poster pours her heart out, each line of the post dripping with self-pity.
"My doctor said my progesterone levels are low, my her HCG levels aren't doubling as expected, and the gestational sac is implanted close to the scar tissue from my last surgery. If the pregnancy continues, it could cause massive bleeding and put my life at risk.
"That's why my husband refuses to let me continue the pregnancy. But he doesn't understand. This baby is the only reminder my best friend left me. How can I force my husband to willingly raise another man's child?"
The comments section is buzzing. Then, one highly upvoted reply makes my blood run cold.
"Girl, you can't fight a man like that head-on. You have to destroy his confidence at the root. You should slip something into his drinks that reduces sperm activity. Then, trick him into getting a fertility test. When he sees a diagnosis saying he has a low sperm count, he'll be devastated.
"After that, when you tell him that you're determined to give him a child no matter what, he'll be so grateful that he'll worship both you and that baby for the rest of his life!"
Staring at the vicious scheme on the screen, I break out in a cold sweat. Just then, my wife walks into the bedroom carrying a warm glass of milk.
"Honey, you've been so stressed taking care of me lately. You're even starting to get gray hairs. Here, have a glass of milk."
Chapter 1
"Once you have a break, let's go for a medical checkup together. If fate still allows me to become a mother, then you shouldn't stop me either, okay?"
Looking at the hopeful expression on my wife, Lauren White's, face, I felt my walls breaking down.
The crazy stories people posted online were other people's problems. The Lauren I knew would stop to feed a stray cat on the side of the road. There was no way she could be that cold-blooded woman in the post.
I accepted the warm mug of milk and drank it down in one go.
"We can get the checkup," I said, setting the empty mug down on the nightstand. "But let's agree on this—if the doctor still says your body can't handle the pregnancy, then you have to listen to me."
Lauren immediately relaxed and nestled into my arms. "Okay. I'll listen to you. I just don't want to live with regrets."
Three days later, we went to a private hospital downtown. Lauren said she'd managed to book an appointment with a well-known specialist.
After a round of blood tests, ultrasounds, and various other examinations, we sat in the waiting area for the results.
20 minutes later, a nurse approached carrying two reports. "Mr. and Mrs. Carter, your test results are ready. Dr. Johnson is waiting for you in his office."
I took the reports and instinctively looked through mine first. Having worked in the medical device industry for nearly a decade, I was fairly familiar with these test reports.
When my eyes landed on the semen analysis section, I froze.
"Sperm concentration: 8x10^6/ml. Progressively motile sperm: 5%. Conclusion: Severe asthenospermia."
Lauren leaned over and glanced at the page. Her eyes instantly reddened.
"Honey, what… What does this mean?" She covered her mouth as tears streamed down her face.
Dr. Johnson let out a heavy sigh. "Mr. Carter, your condition is quite serious. The odds of conceiving naturally are extremely low. Your wife's pregnancy is high-risk, but at this point, it may be your only chance to keep this child.
"If this pregnancy is terminated, the possibility of having another child could be extremely difficult."
Lauren burst into even louder sobs and clutched my arm tightly. "Honey, I'm not afraid of the risks. I'll do anything to bring this baby into the world for you! Even if it costs me my life, I can't let you lose your only chance to have a family."
Every tearful word of hers was filled with devotion.
Yet, as I stared at the report in my hands, my mind was unusually calm. Something was wrong.
The equipment listed on the report was a CX-9000. That machine happened to be one of my company's newest automated analyzers that had just been released the year before. As far as I knew, only the city's General Hospital had purchased one. This private hospital didn't own this machine.
On top of that, the reviewing physician's signature at the bottom belonged to a doctor named Howard Lane. If I recalled correctly, Howard was the head of urology at General Hospital. Why would he be signing off on lab reports issued by a private clinic?
I folded the report and slipped it back into the folder.
"Let's go home," I said calmly.
Lauren was stunned. "Honey, don't be upset. Medicine is so advanced these days. There must be a way."
She carefully studied my expression.
"I'm not upset." I met her gaze and added, "I'm just thinking that fate has a pretty twisted sense of humor."
Back at home, Lauren said she was feeling dizzy and went to lie down in the bedroom.
I sat alone on the living room couch, turned on my phone, and found that anonymous forum post again. It had been posted at 3:00 pm the day before.
The details in the post—low progesterone, poor HCG progression, and the gestational sac attached near old scar tissue—matched Lauren's situation perfectly. And that highly upvoted comment advising the poster to spike her husband's drink and fake an infertility diagnosis basically mirrored today's events almost exactly.
Could it be a coincidence? There was no such thing as a coincidence this perfect.
As my thoughts drifted back to the glass of milk from the night before, a bitterness rose in my throat.
Chapter 2
Beneath that highly upvoted comment, there was a new reply.
"Thanks, girl. I already fed him the drug, and we've got the test results. He feels so guilty now that he doesn't even dare to raise his voice around me. We're definitely keeping the baby."
The reply had been posted ten minutes earlier.
I locked my phone and took a sip from the glass of water on the table, which was now cold. Eight years of love had earned me nothing but betrayal and elaborate scheming.
The bedroom door opened. Lauren walked over and wrapped her arms around my neck from behind.
"Honey, don't sit out here by yourself. It hurts me to see you like this. You heard what the doctor said. The pregnancy is risky, but if I stay in bed and rest more, everything will be fine. For you, and for our family, I'll endure anything."
I lowered my eyes, hiding the emotion beneath them as I spoke, "Lauren, it's my fault. If I were healthy, you wouldn't have to bear such a huge risk."
The moment she heard that, she came around the couch and sat beside me. "Honey, don't say that. We're married. What's yours is mine. If giving you a child means risking my life, then so be it."
Her act was too convincing. If I hadn't seen that forum post, I would've fallen for her act.
I grabbed her hand and patted it. "Alright. Since you're so determined, we'll keep the baby. Tomorrow, I'll hand off some work at the company so I can spend more time taking care of you."
Lauren's eyes lit up. She leaned over and kissed me. "You're the best, honey!"
…
The next afternoon, after finishing up some work, I arrived at the underground parking garage and ran into Jasper Landry, the supposedly innocent male best friend Lauren was always mentioning.
He frequently invited himself over for meals at our house under the guise of friendship. Whenever he drank too much, he'd drape an arm around Lauren's shoulders.
I'd expressed my discomfort about it before, but Lauren simply accused me of being jealous and narrow-minded. She had even said that if they really wanted to be together, they would've gotten together ages ago, and I wouldn't even be in the picture.
Looking back now, I felt like a huge idiot.
Jasper was leaning against my car door, smoking. When he saw me, he raised an eyebrow. "Hey, Tyson. I heard you took Lauren for a checkup last night. Didn't get the results you were hoping for, huh?"
I paused. "Lauren even told you that?"
Jasper laughed, putting out his cigarette. "We don't keep secrets from each other. Her pregnancy is a big deal. I'm the first person she told."
He stepped closer, his tone full of mockery. "Tyson, when a man can't perform, he should just admit it. Some things just aren't meant to be. But don't worry. Lauren is sentimental. Consider it your blessing that she's willing to birth your child and carry on your family name.
"When the kid is born, he'll have excellent genes. After all…"
He deliberately let the sentence hang, then winked at me.
I stared at his face. If this was the day before, I would've punched him without hesitation.
Instead, I smiled and said, "You're right. I'm lucky you've always been there for her."
Jasper grinned even wider. "Tyson, you're too kind. When the baby arrives, I'll make sure to spoil my godchild. I've already bought a bunch of imported prenatal supplements. They're supposedly really good for fetal development."
Just then, Lauren stepped out of the elevator. The moment she spotted Jasper, she hurried toward him. "Jasper, what are you doing here? Weren't you supposed to wait for me at the restaurant?"
Jasper casually put an arm around her shoulders. The gesture was so natural that they looked more like a couple than we did.
"I didn't want you walking alone, so I came to pick you up. And since I'm here, I thought I'd say hello to Tyson."
Only then did Lauren turn to me. "Honey, Lucas found this new restaurant that specializes in prenatal meals. He insisted on taking me there. You still have to work tonight, right? We won't disturb you then."
"Go ahead. Take care. You're carrying a baby. Don't rush around," I said with a smile.
Lauren visibly relaxed. She then took Jasper's arm and got into his car.
I pulled out my phone and called my friend, Beau Brooks.
"Beau, I need your help setting a trap."
Chapter 3
"I need to cook the company's books. I need fake documents showing a cash-flow crisis and an 80-million-dollar loss due to a breach in contract. Make them as convincing as possible."
Beau paused for a moment before saying, "Tyson, that's a pretty big game you're playing. Can Lauren handle this?"
"Just do it."
I hung up and drove home. Then, I gathered up everything valuable in the house—watches, gold bars, and anything worth money—and locked them away in a safe before moving them to Beau's place.
…
The next evening, I sat in the living room with my hair disheveled and my tie loosened. On the coffee table were several forged collection notices and legal notices.
The front door opened. Lauren walked in carrying shopping bags, with Jasper right behind her.
The moment Lauren saw me, she froze. "Honey, what's wrong?"
I looked up, my eyes bloodshot.
"The company's in trouble." I pushed one of the legal notices across the table and continued, "That project we signed last month blew up. The partner company vanished. As a guarantor, I'm held liable."
"How much?" Jasper asked first.
"80 million dollars."
The shopping bags dropped from Lauren's hands.
"80 million dollars? Are you crazy? Where are we supposed to get that kind of money?"
I buried my face in my hands. "The house, the cars, and every account under my name will all be frozen by court order tomorrow. Lauren, I'm sorry. I've dragged you into this."
Lauren's face turned deathly pale. Instinctively, she stepped backward. Jasper quickly steadied her by the shoulders, his eyes flickering.
"Tyson, this isn't a small problem. Lauren's pregnant. She can't handle this kind of stress."
I looked at them. "I know. That's why I'm planning to sell the house to raise whatever money I can."
"No!" Lauren shrieked. "Honey, this is our home. If you sell it, where are we supposed to live? Where will our baby live?"
I sighed. "If I don't sell it, the court will seize it anyway. Then, we'll have nowhere to go at all."
Jasper spoke up, "Tyson, I have an idea."
I looked up at him.
"You two should get divorced first," he said confidently. "Transfer the house and whatever money is left into Lauren's name. That's called asset protection. After the debt is settled, you can get remarried. This way, you'll save the house and the baby."
Lauren nodded furiously. "Yes, yes! Exactly. Honey, Jasper is right. We can get a sham divorce first."
She walked over, crouched down, and grabbed my hand. "I'm not doing this for myself. I'm doing it for you and our child. I can't let our baby be born into debt."
Looking at her face full of calculation, I could feel my heart turn cold.
"But there's a cooling-off period."
Jasper smiled. "Don't worry about that. My uncle works at the courthouse. I can have him pull some strings for us. We can have the paperwork done tomorrow."
I lowered my head, concealing the look in my eyes. "Fine. Let's do it your way."
The next day, we went to the courthouse. Apparently, Jasper's uncle really did have connections. In less than an hour, the divorce certificate was in our hands.
Lauren slipped the document into her purse and let out a long breath of relief. "Honey, I'm sorry you'll have to put up with this for a while. Don't worry. I'll take good care of myself and the baby."
I looked at her calmly. "You get the house, while I get the debt. Take care of yourself from now on."
Lauren's eyes immediately reddened. "Don't say that. This is only temporary. Once you're back on your feet, I'll bring our child back to you."
Beside her, Jasper urged, "Lauren, we should go. We're going to be late for your checkup."
Lauren turned to me and said, "Honey, I'll head to my appointment first. Make sure you take care of yourself."
Then, she climbed into Jasper's car.
I stood by the roadside, watching the car drive away. Then, I took out my phone and sent Beau a message. "I got the certificate. Restore the company's books."
His reply came quickly. "Tyson, congratulations on escaping the nightmare! Drinks tonight?"
"Another time. I need to move out first."
Chapter 4
I went back to the house, packed my things, and then checked into a nearby hotel.
Over the next two weeks, Lauren didn't call me once. On the other hand, Jasper's social media updates became increasingly frequent.
"The crib I bought for my godson arrived today. Lauren loves it."
"I took Lauren to a followup checkup today. The doctor said the gestational sac is in an unfavorable position and recommended termination. But Lauren said she's willing to risk everything for the child born from love."
Below was Lauren's comment. "Thank you for always being there for me. You're the best."
I stared at the screen and sneered. The doctor had already warned her repeatedly that the pregnancy was dangerous, but she was determined to have the baby no matter what.
Fine. Then, let her.
A month later, late at night, I was in my hotel reviewing a contract when my phone suddenly began vibrating nonstop.
It was Jasper. I answered the call.
"Tyson Carter, where the hell are you? Get down to General Hospital right now! Lauren's losing a lot of blood. She's in emergency surgery. What kind of husband are you?"
"If she's bleeding, call the doctors. Why are you looking for me?" I replied.
"They need a family member's consent. The doctors say they have to remove her uterus to save her life!" Jasper yelled. "Get down here and sign the paperwork! If you're any later, Lauren could die!"
My voice remained calm. "You're her best friend, aren't you? You sign it."
"I'm just a friend. The hospital won't accept my signature! They need her legal husband. Hurry up!"
I hung up the phone, changed my clothes, and headed out.
The ER of General Hospital was chaotic. Outside the operating room, people were running back and forth. Lauren's mother, Christina Mayer, was sitting on the floor crying hysterically. Jasper was leaning against the wall, his face deathly pale.
The moment he saw me, he stormed over and grabbed my collar. "You've got some nerve showing up now! Lauren's fighting for her life in there, and you decide to take your sweet time?"
I pulled his hand away. "Don't touch me."
Christina scrambled to her feet and pointed at me. "Tyson Carter, you ungrateful bastard! My daughter nearly died trying to have your child. When you lost everything, she never abandoned you. And this is how you repay her?"
Just then, the operating room doors swung open. A doctor walked out carrying a stack of forms.
"Who is Lauren White's family? The patient has suffered a ruptured scar pregnancy and severe hemorrhage. We need to perform a total hysterectomy immediately. We need her husband's consent."
Jasper shoved me toward the doctor. "Him! He's Lauren's husband. Let him sign."
The doctor handed me a pen. "Sir, the situation is urgent. We need a decision now."
I took a step backward. I didn't touch the pen. "Her life has nothing to do with me."
The entire hallway fell silent.
Christina stared at me in disbelief. "What did you just say? That's your wife in there!"
Jasper gritted his teeth. "Tyson, what kind of man are you? Are you seriously trying to avoid responsibility right now?"
Even the doctor frowned. "Sir, this is not the time to throw a tantrum. A life is at stake."
I reached into my pocket and pulled out a document, holding it up for everyone to see.
"Take a good look. I'm not her husband. We got divorced two weeks ago. So, Lauren has absolutely nothing to do with me anymore. Her life is not my responsibility. Besides, the child isn't even mine!"
