第1章

At my daughter's private-school swim final, someone stuffed live leeches inside her swimsuit. By the time I dragged Lily out of the pool, her skin was covered in tiny bleeding wounds. The water around us had turned pink. And the man responsible was laughing. Victor Hale stood at the edge of the pool with his daughter beside him, watching Lily shake in my arms. Then he slapped me across the face. Once. Twice. Ten times. “Teach your daughter her place.” His daughter, Chloe, folded her arms and smiled. “A scholarship brat actually thought she could beat me?” Victor crouched in front of me. “You know who my wife is?” “Selena Hart. Acting chairwoman of Vesper Holdings.” His smile widened. “One phone call from her, and I can make you and your little rat disappear from New York.” I slowly lifted my eyes. Interesting. Because Vesper Holdings belonged to my family. And the Carusos weren't just another Mafia family. We were the most powerful crime dynasty in the country. This generation had only one heir. Me. So when had another girl become its princess? I wiped the blood from the corner of my mouth and dialed Selena. We had been together for fifteen years. Married for eleven. Three years ago, I left New York to deal with the Caruso family's overseas territories. Before I left, I put the entire legitimate side of the empire in her hands. And I left our daughter with her. Someone answered after three rings. A woman's voice. “Who is this?” I went still. “Put Selena on.” The woman laughed. “You reporters are getting desperate. Ms. Hart is in a board meeting. Call again and Vesper Legal will bury you.” She hung up. I stared at the phone. Fifteen years. And my number wasn't even saved. Then my eyes dropped to Victor's chest. Around his neck hung a black jade medallion engraved with a crowned serpent. My father's medallion. The Caruso family seal. There were only three in existence. And on Chloe's wrist— A pink diamond bracelet. I had bought it in Geneva for Lily's seventh birthday. Suddenly, everything became very quiet. If I hadn't returned to New York early today, how long would this have gone on? Another year? Another three? Forever? Victor mistook my silence for fear. “Finally understand who you're dealing with?” The referee hurried over, eager to please him. “Mr. Hale, don't waste your time on them.” Then he pointed at Lily. “This girl has been causing trouble all season. Everyone knows Miss Chloe is the favorite to win.” Parents around the pool began whispering. “A poor kid fighting the Hale girl for first place?” “She was asking for trouble.” “I heard she lives off school aid.” Lily trembled in my arms. Her fingers twisted into my shirt. “Dad…” “I didn't cause trouble.” Her voice was tiny. “I just wanted to win.” “The prize is a thousand dollars.” She swallowed hard. “I wanted to buy you a present.” My chest tightened. She continued quickly, as though afraid I would be angry. “And the coach said if I win, I might get a full athletic scholarship.” “Then you wouldn't have to spend money on me anymore.” For three years, I had ordered Selena to transfer one hundred thousand dollars into Lily's personal account every month. Yet my daughter was risking her life for a thousand-dollar prize. Before I could speak, a pair of goggles struck Lily across the face. Chloe stood there. “You knew my mom booked the ballroom at the St. Regis for my victory party.” Her lip curled. “And you still tried to beat me?” Lily flinched. Victor smiled. “You want attention that badly?” He snapped his fingers. Reporters immediately raised their cameras. “Get this.” One of them laughed. “Scholarship student caught using blood-sucking leeches to boost circulation before swim final.” “Great headline.” Lily covered herself with both arms. “Dad…” “It hurts.” That broke something inside me. I looked at the cameras. “Anyone publishes one photograph of my daughter—” My voice was quiet. “—and I will erase your company from this city.” The room fell silent for half a second. Then Victor laughed. I ignored him. I called the only person in New York I still trusted. “Aunt Rosa.” “Lily is hurt.” “Bring the Caruso medical team.” I looked directly at Victor. “And freeze every authority Selena Hart currently holds.” A pause. Then Rosa's voice hardened. “Understood, young Don.” “I’m coming.”

Victor knocked the phone from my hand. “You still calling people?” He smirked. “You really don't know when to stop.” I looked at him. “You injured my daughter.” “And now you want us to apologize?” Chloe rolled her eyes. “Everyone at school knows what happens when someone annoys me.” She looked at Lily. “Tell him.” Lily's face went white. Her breathing changed. I immediately understood. I crouched in front of her. “Lily.” “Look at me.” Her eyes filled with tears. “Dad…” “They make me crawl around the athletic field.” “Chloe rides on my back.” My jaw locked. “How many times?” She didn't answer. That told me enough. Victor laughed. “Kids fool around.” I stood. He continued casually. “If your daughter behaved, none of this would happen.” I hit him. One clean punch across the mouth. Victor stumbled backward. The entire pool went silent. He touched his split lip. Then looked at the blood on his fingers. “You hit me?” “I should have done worse.” His face twisted. “Lock the building down.” Seven armed men moved immediately. The exits were sealed. Outside, black SUVs blocked the driveway. “No ambulance enters,” Victor ordered. “No one leaves.” Lily's body was growing hotter in my arms. The longer the leeches remained attached, the more blood she lost. I carried her toward the door. Two guards blocked me. Victor stepped into my path. “Apologize.” “No.” “Kneel.” “No.” He smiled. “Then watch your daughter suffer.” I stared at him for several seconds. Then said quietly, “This city has survived because the Caruso family allows it to.” “You are standing in Caruso territory.” “You are blocking Caruso doctors.” “And you are hurting the only Caruso heir of her generation.” Victor blinked. Then laughed so hard he nearly doubled over. “You?” “The Caruso family?” He looked around. “Did everyone hear that?” The parents laughed with him. One woman covered her mouth. “He actually thinks he's the Don.” Victor waved a hand. “Break him.” His men came at me together. Three years ago, that would have been a mistake. Today, carrying an injured child, it became a problem. They forced me down. My knee struck the tile. Victor grabbed my hair. “Ninety-nine times.” He pointed at the floor. “Make him bow.” My forehead slammed against the marble. Once. Twice. Again. Blood slid down between my eyes. Lily screamed. “Dad!” She tried to crawl toward me. Chloe kicked her away. Lily collapsed. Something in me went cold. Victor pulled out his phone. “Watch this.” He called Selena. She answered almost immediately. His voice softened. “Baby, someone hit me.” Selena sounded furious. “Who?” “I don't know. Some nobody.” “He says his name is—” “I don't care who he is.” Her voice sliced through the speaker. “No one in New York gets to touch my man.” “Do whatever you want.” “I'll come after the meeting.” The parents around us smiled. Victor bent close to my ear. “Still want to pretend you're important?” Lily crawled to Chloe. “Please.” Her voice shook. “I'll let you ride me again.” “As many laps as you want.” “Just don't hurt my dad.” Chloe kicked her in the shoulder. “Too late.” Then a voice thundered from the entrance. “Take your hands off him.” Every head turned. An elderly woman in a black coat walked into the pool hall. Silver hair. Straight back. Black cane. Rosa Caruso. The woman who had served my grandfather, my father— and now me.

Victor immediately straightened. “Aunt Rosa?” Everyone in New York's old circles knew her. Even men who had never met a Caruso knew enough to lower their voices when she entered a room. She ignored Victor completely. She came to me. When she saw the blood on my face, something dangerous flashed in her eyes. “Young Don.” She bowed her head. “I failed you.” The entire room froze. Victor's smile disappeared. Rosa turned toward Lily. Then saw the wounds covering her arms. Her hand tightened around her cane. “Who did this?” No one answered. Victor took a step back. I caught Rosa's sleeve. “The doctors?” Her expression changed. “Selena stopped them.” She handed me her phone. A recording played. Selena's voice. “Rosa, Lily is fine.” “The school told me she has a habit of exaggerating.” “Stop wasting Vesper resources every time she wants attention.” My fingers tightened around the phone. Rosa looked ashamed. “For the past three years, Selena has gradually removed the old Caruso staff.” “She sent me to one of the family estates under the excuse that I was too old to work.” “I only learned today what had been happening to Lily.” Three years. While I was overseas protecting the empire— Selena had been dismantling my house from the inside. A medical team suddenly entered. Rosa exhaled. “At least she changed her mind.” She was wrong. The doctors walked directly past Lily. They surrounded Victor. “Mr. Hale, Ms. Hart sent us.” “She heard you'd been injured.” Victor's confidence returned instantly. He looked at Rosa. Then threw a document at her feet. “Since you're here, read this.” Rosa picked it up. Her expression darkened. Victor smiled. “Effective immediately, you're removed from all positions connected to Vesper Holdings.” Rosa laughed once. Coldly. “Selena Hart does not have the authority to dismiss me.” “You're an old servant.” Victor shrugged. “My wife runs Vesper now.” His eyes shifted between us. Then understanding dawned across his face. “Oh.” He smiled. “So that's why this guy acts so arrogant.” He pointed at me. “Rosa's little kept man?” The room erupted in whispers. Rosa's cane struck the floor. “Mind your tongue.” “You are speaking to—” I raised one hand. She stopped. Victor laughed. “What?” “Going to tell me he's secretly some prince?” He turned toward the giant screen overlooking the pool. “Actually, this is perfect.” He opened an encrypted application. The Black Ledger. A private bounty and sanction network used by several syndicates across the East Coast. He pointed at Lily. “Let's see how brave Daddy is when his daughter has a price on her head.” My eyes cooled. Victor typed Lily's name. Then mine. He pressed CONFIRM. A red loading symbol appeared. Everyone waited. Then— ACCESS DENIED. Victor frowned. He tried again. ACCESS DENIED. MASTER-LEVEL PROTECTION. Silence. Victor's fingers began moving faster. Again. Again. Again. The same message appeared every time. Whispers spread through the room. “He can't add them?” “Who has master-level protection?” Victor slammed his fist against the screen. “System glitch.” I looked at him. “Try again.” He turned sharply. I smiled. “Please.” “I'd like to see how far your authority goes.” The main doors opened. High heels clicked across the marble. A woman entered surrounded by black-suited guards. Perfect dress. Perfect posture. Perfectly controlled expression. Selena Hart. My wife. Victor's face lit up. “My love.” He walked straight toward her. Then kissed her. Right in front of me.
