At the first-birthday party for my adopted sister Sylvia Dawson's daughter, my secret husband of three years, Austin Quinlan, was rocking the child like he'd done it a thousand times.
I thought he was finally going to announce who I was. I walked toward him, giddy with it. "Honey—"
Before I could finish, Sylvia leaned in from the side, her hand settling naturally against Austin's chest, and spoke in Portuguese.
"Husband, why don't you go greet the guests, and I'll take her. You've been shut away with me and the baby all these days. Won't Claire mind?"
Austin gave her hand a squeeze and pressed a gentle kiss to the side of her face, answering her in the same Portuguese.
"She won't. I told her ages ago I was away on business."
The two of them moved with the ease of long practice.
I froze where I stood, a ringing filling my head, and the gift slipped from my hands and clattered to the floor.
Austin's gaze followed the sound to me. He let go of Sylvia's hand in a panic and stammered.
"Claire, why are you here?"
"Son-in-law, here's the first-birthday gift. We picked out a pair of bracelets to keep her safe."
My parents came over with a black gift box and slipped the bracelets onto the child's wrist, the whole thing practiced, routine.
Their ease with it was a knife going into my chest.
"Mom and Dad, did you know about this all along? Why did you never tell me this child existed?"
They lifted their eyes and gave me a flat look, then took the child from Austin without a hitch. Their tone was even.
"I sent you the invitation. The child's already a year old. It's about time you knew."
The blood in me went to ice, and I could barely breathe.
No one knew I'd minored in Portuguese in college.
I'd known for a long time about the affair between my husband and my adopted sister.
But I never imagined they'd had a child.
And my own parents had hidden it from me for a whole year.
Since family and the man I loved had all chosen to betray me, then I didn't want either of these families anymore.
...
I watched the smug flicker in my adopted sister's eyes, and something bitter welled up in me.
"Someone come. The eldest young lady isn't feeling well. Take her to a room to rest!"
Austin had already dropped the nervousness. He gave the order with a wave of his hand.
The next moment a bodyguard clamped a hand over my mouth, hauled me up by the arms, and dragged me upstairs.
I struggled the whole way, and when I looked up I met Austin's cold eyes.
I was thrown roughly into a storage room and locked in, and no matter how much noise I made, no one came.
Only after the music and dancing outside had died down did Austin finally open the door.
He crouched beside me and gripped my chin. "It's the child's birthday today. I know exactly how you get when you throw a fit. If I didn't lock you up first, there's no telling how ugly you'd have made it."
"And Sylvia's sensitive to begin with. She just gave birth, she still feels unsafe. Don't go making a scene in front of her."
The sharp pain from my chin ran straight to my heart, and tears stung and swam in my eyes.
I opened my mouth and bit down on his arm, and only when the taste of blood filled my mouth did I let go, and said coldly.
"Austin, I didn't throw a fit, and I didn't say who I was. Don't stand here deciding I did."
"I'll go ahead and tell you—I understand Portuguese. You and Sylvia have been going at it behind everyone's back for a long time, haven't you? Every business trip was in her bed, wasn't it?"
At that, Austin's pupils shrank. He stared at me for a moment, then simply stopped pretending.
The panic in his eyes drained away completely. Instead he lifted his arm back to my mouth. "Claire, since you already know, there's nothing for me to explain. I understand you're angry. Feel better now? If not, bite again."
Disgust surged up my throat. I kicked him hard, swayed to my feet, and started for the door.
"Austin, are you all right? Sister, if you're upset, take it out on me, don't touch Austin!"
Sylvia threw herself against Austin, crying, aching for him.
I didn't miss the malice that flashed through her eyes. I folded my arms and looked at her coldly. "Back then you were the one who refused to marry him, who made me do it. Now here you are crawling up to call him husband and bear his child. Sylvia, have you no shame?"
Crack.
A burning pain spread across my face, and I clutched my cheek in disbelief.
Austin actually hit me for Sylvia's sake?
"Who here knows you're my wife? Say it out loud and people will just think you're a con artist."
Austin tucked Sylvia behind him and looked down at me, his voice hard with warning. "Claire Dawson, you'd better keep that mouth of yours shut. If I hear you say one more bad word about Sylvia, then those bridal photos three days from now—I don't think there's any point taking them either."
A sharp pain shot through my chest, and I lowered my head and laughed at myself.
Three years married to Austin, and all I had to show for it was two marriage certificates.
I'd always been hoping for a few bridal photos, some proof that we'd loved each other.
But a few words from Sylvia, and he was ready to cancel them.
How laughable.
A cool hand covered my cheek. Sylvia gazed at me with feigned concern and said, in a voice only the two of us could hear, "Sister, you still don't know, do you? Back then, Mom and Dad decided—the name on your marriage certificate with Austin is mine."
I went completely still, my mind blank.
Rage and grief flooded my head, and Sylvia's face warped and twisted in front of me.
I reached out and shoved her aside and stumbled toward the door.
The next moment my arm was yanked back. Austin caught the falling Sylvia in his arms and glared at me viciously.
"Sylvia's body is weak as it is, and you still shoved her! Then your bridal photos will be the compensation—Sylvia will take them instead!"
"All you had to do was not make a scene, and I'd have thrown you a proper wedding down the line. But no, you're cruel to the bone, you can't stand to let Sylvia have anything!"

I threw his hand off and looked down, laughing at myself.
A marriage this sick, one where I didn't even count as a real wife. What was left to want?
I should have ended it long ago.
The stone in my chest dropped all at once. I lifted my eyes to Austin and slapped him across the face.
"The bridal photos can be my gift to celebrate your affair."
"Austin, three years ago you started dangling that wedding in front of me. A liar's promises. Who believes those?"
I said it, ignored the shock on both their faces, turned, and walked out of the storage room.
My palm burned, and the bitterness of it flooded me while the tears kept sliding down my cheeks.
A clean white handkerchief appeared in front of me. Cousin Meredith gently wiped my tears away, then patted my back to comfort me.
"Claire, before you got here, I happened to see Austin acting close with your adopted sister. I wasn't sure if I was reading too much into it..."
I buried my face against her, my voice muffled. "Meredith, Sylvia's child is Austin's."
The next moment, my cousin, who now understood everything, hurled the handkerchief to the floor, blazing with anger. "Austin knew exactly what your life at home was like, and he still slept with your adopted sister! It's disgusting. I'm going to bury the both of them, that pair of dogs!"
I reached out and held her tight, shaking my head. "Meredith, I want to handle this myself."
The party was over, but my parents were still parading their grandson around, showing him off to everyone.
"My grandson's so adorable, he'll grow up gorgeous, no question. All those good genes from his mom and dad."
"And let me tell you, my son-in-law is the heir to the Quinlan Group. Trust Sylvia to know how to make a man like that love her so deeply."
The relatives all smiled and played along.
Cousin Meredith's parents had never gotten along with mine. "Sylvia this, Sylvia that, all day long. Anyone listening would think Sylvia's your real daughter."
"Isn't Claire still unmarried? Have your outstanding son-in-law introduce her to someone."
My mother's face soured, her voice cold. "Claire's slow, never been likable to begin with. Introducing anyone would be a waste."
"Besides, we've long treated Sylvia as our own daughter."
Cousin Meredith gripped my hand hard, her face flushed red with fury. "After all these years your parents still can't see straight! Not one decent person among them!"
I looked at them without expression. The stinging in my palm wasn't a fraction of what I felt inside.
When I was two, my mother's carelessness let me get lost, and my parents searched for me for two years.
In those two years, they adopted an orphan, Sylvia.
By the time I came back, Sylvia was already the treasure of the Dawson family.
She was sweet-mouthed and good with words, easy to love, and on top of that, one look at me was all it took to remind my mother of her own sin.
So whatever Sylvia wanted, she got the moment she asked for it, even things that had been mine.
But Sylvia was never satisfied. She hated that my return split away our parents' love, so she lied and said I had secretly thrown out our mother's limited-edition gemstone necklace.
That day, I defended myself as hard as I could, and what I got for it was three slaps from my mother and a day and a night locked in the pitch-black isolation room.
"I never should have brought you back! Out there you picked up every filthy habit, and now you frame Sylvia. You've truly disappointed me!"
I curled myself into a ball in the corner, until there were no tears left to cry.
Just as I was about to pass out, the door of the isolation room slammed open.
Austin held me tight, his voice frantic and aching.
"Claire, I'm sorry. I came too late."
He kept calling my name, but he never heard me answer.
"Claire, don't fall asleep. Please. How am I supposed to live without you?"
"Young Master Quinlan, you can't take Claire away. She did something wrong, and she has to be punished!"
My parents blocked Austin and me at the door, their eyes cold.
"Since when did the Dawsons get so bold! You don't want Claire, but I do! Get out of my way!"
Austin, seventeen years old, ignored my parents' obstruction and took me back to the Quinlan house.
That night, his warm tears fell on my shoulder, his arms wrapped tight around me. "Claire, I only want you. From now on, I'll be the one at your back."
After that, wherever I went, Austin followed.
He doted on me. Even if I wanted the stars in the sky, he'd find a way to pluck them down for me.
How could an Austin like that not make my heart move?
And now the person at the tip of his heart had become Sylvia, and the love that once belonged only to me had all been given to her.
Laughter in the distance pulled me back. Sylvia had taken Austin by the arm and was announcing the date of their wedding.
"Everyone's welcome to come to our wedding next week."
The staff were handing out invitations to the relatives when someone suddenly said, "How come there's no Claire's name on this invitation?"
Austin's expression stayed even, though a flicker of distaste crossed it. "Claire's personality isn't pleasant, and she doesn't like socializing, so we didn't invite her."
The boy who once had eyes only for me was now saying I wasn't worth pleasing anyone.
I laughed at myself, and I didn't stay any longer. I took Cousin Meredith's hand and left.
It was all over.
The next moment, a call flashed up on my phone.

On the other end of the line was the Locke family heir, Austin's arch-rival.
"Last time I asked you to marry me. Have you thought it over?"
Preston Locke's low voice came through the phone.
"Fine. I'll do it. Let's hold the wedding in a week. I have some personal matters to settle first."
I hung up and had barely slipped my phone back into my bag when someone moved up behind me.
A damp cloth clamped over my nose and mouth, and a sharp chemical smell flooded in.
The next instant, everything went black.
When I came to, a run-down warehouse swam into view, and I was tied to a chair, too weak to move.
Sylvia stood there turning a test report and a pregnancy stick over in her hands, delighted. "Claire, you're pregnant. What a coincidence, isn't it?"
"What?"
I stared at her, dazed, unable to believe there was already a tiny life inside me.
She held a small knife, laying the cold flat of the blade against my cheek, her voice venomous. "Why can I never win against you?"
"Do you know what happened? After I announced the wedding between me and Austin, he actually came to me and said we should keep it small, not invite too many people. All because of you!"
"Claire, let's make a bet. Let's see who he chooses this time. Whoever's left over can just die."
With that, she had her men tie her to a chair too.
The next moment, the warehouse doors were slammed open, and Austin rushed in with his bodyguards.
One of the kidnappers pressed a gun to my neck and Sylvia's. "Mr. Quinlan, you can only take one. The other one gets thrown into the sea to feed the sharks."
Sylvia gazed up at Austin, pitiful, her voice pleading. "Austin, I'm scared. Our baby is still waiting for us to come home."
"A minute ago I heard my sister talking with these kidnappers. Did she set this whole kidnapping up on purpose?"
I looked at her in disbelief, biting down hard on my lip. "It wasn't me. Sylvia did all of it! Austin, I'm carrying your child!"
At that, fury filled Austin's eyes. He bit out each word. "Impossible."
"The day Sylvia and I had our child, I went and got a vasectomy."
"Claire, how low can you go? Not only did you cheat, you deliberately staged a kidnapping to frame her."
My heart was being cut to pieces. A vast grief swallowed me whole, and I started laughing like a madwoman.
Austin looked at my belly, his eyes ice-cold. "I choose Sylvia."
"Do whatever you want with Claire. Better to get rid of that bastard in her belly."
Sylvia threw herself sobbing into Austin's arms, and he caught her, looking at me with disgust.
"Claire, I never should have protected you back then. It seems your parents were right all those years ago. A liar should never have been brought home."
"You should have died out there, so you couldn't come back and make everyone sick of you."
I stared at him, unable to believe it.
He was actually using the deepest, most painful scar inside me to wound me.
His heart had long since sided with Sylvia, just like Mom and Dad's.
I struggled to lunge forward, but the kidnappers pinned me and dragged me away.
"Sister, I won. Everything of yours is mine now."
Sylvia mouthed the words silently, her eyes full of triumph.
"Sylvia, I'm sorry I was late. I frightened you. At the wedding next week, I'll let everyone know you're my bride."
Austin's words poured into my ears. I stopped struggling, and the kidnappers shoved me into the bottomless sea.
Salty seawater rushed into my nose, and everything before me went dark.
When I opened my eyes again, I was back in the cramped bedroom at the Dawson house.
My parents glared at me with pure malice. "What do you still have to say for yourself?"
They dragged me roughly into Sylvia's room. "You kidnapped your sister and scared her half to death. How did I ever raise an ungrateful animal like you?"
My abdomen hurt terribly, and when I lifted my eyes toward the bed, I saw Sylvia wink at me, smug.
Rage burned away my reason. I lunged and grabbed Sylvia's arm, but she caught hold of me and said softly,
"Sister, do you know why Austin said you couldn't possibly be pregnant with his child? Because from the very first year you two were together, he swapped the vitamins you always took for sterilization pills."
I froze where I stood, tears sliding down my cheeks.
So it had all been one-sided from the start.
He had been cruel enough to strip me of even the right to become a mother.

Sylvia reached out and brushed her hand across my pale face, letting it settle at last on my ear. "The second I knew you were pregnant, I told Austin. I said, offhand, that I didn't like your baby—and he agreed to have the kidnappers push you into the sea, so you'd lose it."
My heart felt like it was being pierced by a thousand needles, the pain so sharp I couldn't breathe.
Austin knew perfectly well I'd always wanted a child.
When he loved me, he wanted to lay the whole world at my feet. When he stopped, one word from Sylvia was enough for him to get rid of our baby.
The pain in my belly surged up all at once, like fire climbing through me.
I slapped her hand off my face.
"Ah! Claire, why did you push me? Won't you be happy until I'm dead?"
Sylvia rolled off the bed to my feet, wailing in agony.
The next moment Austin came storming in and kicked me in the stomach.
"Claire, kidnapping Sylvia wasn't enough? You want her dead too? How can you be so vicious?"
Sylvia threw herself pitifully into his arms. "Claire, I know you don't like me, but please, have mercy on my baby. She's so small. She can't grow up without a mother."
The agony rolled through my whole body. I clutched my stomach, pale-faced, and forced out the truth. "I didn't push her. She fell on her own!"
The next instant a cane came down across my back. Dad glared at me, seething. "If not you, then who? You've lied your whole life. You should have just died out there!"
Mom's eyes were full of disgust as she looked at me coldly. "Claire, how did I ever give birth to something like you? All these years Sylvia has kindly taught you, spoken up for you, and what did you do? Not only were you jealous of her, you repaid her kindness by trying to hurt her!"
It was always like this. No matter how much I said, no one would believe me.
The taste of rust filled my throat, and I stared at Austin.
Would he believe me this time? Would he take me away?
But he looked at me with revulsion, as if he'd seen something filthy.
The water boiling inside me suddenly went still. A strange, absurd calm settled over me, deeper than anything I'd felt before.
I laughed at myself, and with all the strength I had, I grabbed the cane and lashed it back down against the floor. "That last strike just cut every tie. From now on I have nothing to do with the Dawsons. Play favorites with whoever you like."
"You've lost your mind! You dare to fight back? Every single thing that's happened—which one of them wronged you? I'll beat this wicked girl to death!"
Dad wrenched the cane back and struck my back over and over, only stopping when Sylvia offered her fake, mincing protests.
"Dad, stop hitting Claire. She didn't mean to."
"She brought it on herself! Sylvia, how are you feeling? We're taking you to the hospital right now."
Sylvia was ushered out in the middle of the crowd, taken off to the hospital.
Before she left, I didn't miss the smug smile at the corner of her mouth.
With trembling hands I pulled the wedding ring off my finger and dropped it on the floor.
If I was leaving, I wouldn't keep a single thread of longing.
The wedding a week later—the groom would no longer be Austin.
The wounds were torn open again and again, the pain spreading through my whole body.
Scalding tears slid from the corners of my eyes without my permission, soaking the hair at my temples.
I fished out my phone and, with the last of my strength, called Preston.
"I'm at the Dawson house. Come and get me now."
The pain swallowed my consciousness. I couldn't hold on any longer, and I passed out.
The smell of disinfectant filled my nose. Someone was gripping my hand tightly.
The moment I woke, Preston was watching me, tense. "Does anything hurt? I'll call the doctor!"
He fumbled for the call button and held a cup of water to my lips.
When the doctor finished the examination, his face full of apology, he said, "I'm sorry, miss. We did everything we could. There was nothing we could do to save your baby."
I clutched the blanket, tears running down my cheeks.
On the day of the wedding, Austin stood on the stage and slid the ring onto Sylvia's finger with his own hand.
In that moment he suddenly thought of me, and unease began to creep in.
After he stepped off the stage, he called me, but the call didn't go through.
He called more than a dozen times, and still it wouldn't connect. The agitation inside him kept swelling.
"Austin, your archenemy is getting married today too. Take a look—whose daughter did he land?"
His buddy teased him, holding up the headline on his phone.
Austin caught sight of me first, smiling brilliantly in the photo. Disbelief flooded through him.
"Claire?"
