I caught the bouquet at my best friend's wedding, and everyone expected Ethan—my boyfriend of eight years—to finally say he'd marry me. Instead, he took the flowers from my hands and gave them to his secretary. Our own wedding was supposed to be the following week. Ethan dismissed my hurt, told me marriage could wait, and kept choosing her whenever it mattered. So I ended our relationship, sold our condo, and went ahead with the wedding I had planned—with someone else. He thought I was bluffing right up until he arrived at the ceremony and saw another man's name beside mine.

第1章

At my best friend’s wedding, a bridesmaid caught the bouquet. It bounced off her hands and landed in mine. Everyone turned toward my boyfriend, Ethan Cole. We’d been together eight years. The crowd began chanting, “Marry her! Marry her!” Ethan walked over. I blushed, waiting for him to say he would. Instead, he calmly took the bouquet from my hands and gave it back to the woman who’d caught it first. “She got it before you did,” he said, smoothing my hair. “We’ll have another chance.” The spotlight followed the flowers away. The bridesmaid, Chloe Reed, smiled up at him. Ethan stepped back into the crowd as if nothing had happened. My wedding was next week. My best friend, Sophie, looked ready to slap him. I caught her wrist. “Not today,” I whispered. “You’re the bride.” At the reception, I sat with Sophie’s family while Ethan laughed with his friends. Chloe sat close beside him, closer than a secretary needed to sit. She hadn’t been a bridesmaid until the groom’s side needed one more. Ethan had brought her to parties and work events for months, always calling it “good experience.” Sophie hugged me during the toast. “She’s been circling him for half a year. I looked into her. Her tricks are subtle.” “Sophie. Please.” The reception wasn’t over yet.

Ethan picked up my bag after the reception and reached to put an arm around my shoulders. I shifted away. “You’ve been drinking,” I said. “I’ll call a car.” “Sure.” He tapped through his phone as the car pulled into the night. “Chloe got the bouquet first,” he said after a while. “She just wanted some wedding luck. Don’t take it personally.” He rubbed the back of my neck. “Our wedding will be even better than Sophie’s. You can have as many bouquets as you want.” He always offered me some future version of what I wanted. “Sophie and I made a promise when we were kids,” I said. “Whichever one of us married first, the other would marry within a week. We’d be each other’s bridesmaids.” He laughed. “You still believe that childhood joke? Planning a wedding takes a year.” He had no answer for why he couldn’t say he’d marry me in front of our friends. He just jumped ahead to planning a perfect ceremony someday. When Sophie tried on the champagne-colored dress she’d designed for me, she’d promised to make my wedding gown, too. Ethan had looked up from work long enough to say it was nice. The car stopped at our building. Ethan leaned in to kiss me. “I’m tired,” I said, placing a hand on his chest.

He didn’t argue. He only patted my shoulder. “Being a bridesmaid is exhausting. Get some sleep. Chloe can’t get a ride, so I’m going back to take her home.” “Okay.” I went inside alone. By the nursery we’d planned four years ago, I stopped. It had become a storage room. Under a dusty crib lay old letters, ticket stubs, photos from trips, and our university memories. The bottom photo showed Ethan carrying me beneath a cherry tree. On the back, he’d written: I’ll carry you for the rest of my life. Promise. I was still holding the photo when he came home. “Looking through these?” he asked lightly. “Feeling nostalgic?” “Did you get her home?” “Yeah. She lives far out.” He reached to help me up. I stood on my own. “Ethan, let’s break up.” He smiled like I’d made a silly threat over the bouquet. “You’re still upset? I’ll order you an even bigger one tomorrow.” He headed for the bathroom. “Within a week,” I said to his back, “I’m getting married.”
