第1章
I go to my family's bank branch to handle some business. I wait in line for half an hour, and just as it's about to be my turn, two women cut straight in front of me.
Before I can even react, one of them snaps at me.
“Get to the back of the line. My client has an appointment.”
Jessica Sloan — the branch manager. Her name tag catches my eye.
I glance at the line behind me.
“I’ve been waiting for half an hour.”
Jessica rolls her eyes.
“Then wait another half hour.”
I look at the woman beside her.
“Why does she get to cut in front of everyone?”
Jessica crosses her arms.
“Because she’s my client.”
I raise an eyebrow. “And?”
“I manage this branch.”
She gives me a look like that should be enough.
Then she drops the one thing I never expect to hear.
“I’m the CEO’s wife.”
She looks me straight in the eye.
“So around here, what I say goes.”
I blink.
The CEO of Sterling Bank...
Isn’t that my husband?
Gavin Cole.
I pull out my phone and call him.
He picks up almost immediately.
“Gavin. Since when does our bank let people cut the line?”
“What happened?”
“The branch manager, Jessica Sloan, just let her client cut straight to the front.”
There’s a brief pause.
Then Gavin says, “She’s got a temper. Just leave it alone.”
I can’t believe what I’m hearing.
“She’s abusing her authority.”
“Let it go.”
I look at Jessica.
She’s watching me with a smug little smile.
My fingers tighten around my phone.
“Why?”
“Most of her clients keep millions with us. We can’t afford to lose those relationships.”
“And don’t call her out in front of her clients. You’ll embarrass her.”
Before I can say anything else, he hangs up.
I stare at my phone.
Jessica smirks.
“I told you.”
She points toward the back of the line.
“Get in line.”
“Now.”
I’m done talking to her.
I head straight for Gavin’s office. I’ll ask him myself.
This is my family’s bank.
My father, Robert Sterling, is Sterling Bank’s chairman and majority owner. Our family has controlled the bank for generations.
And I want to know why a branch manager thinks she can make her own rules.
Jessica catches up with me from behind and grabs my arm.
“Did you not hear me?”
“I told you to get back in line. Why are you going to my husband’s office?”
“Going to complain about me?”
“Go ahead. I’m the branch manager, and I’m the CEO’s wife. What I say goes around here.”
Her grip tightens around my arm, hard enough to hurt.
I jerk free.
“I don’t care what you are to your boss.”
I push open the office door.
And freeze.
Gavin isn’t there.
But the room is a mess.
Clothes are thrown over the couch. A makeup bag sits on the desk.
A pair of heels lies on the floor.
And hanging over the back of Gavin’s chair is a woman’s bra.
This is supposed to be an office.
It looks more like someone’s bedroom.
Before I can make sense of what I’m seeing, Jessica folds her arms and lets out a cold laugh.
“My husband isn’t here. Give it up.”
“Now get out before you make a bigger scene.”
A few employees glance over at the commotion.
Then I start hearing the whispers.
“Who is she?”
“Not sure. Probably just another person who pissed Jessica off.”
“Remember that customer last month? He argued with her, and she kicked him out.”
“Shh. She’ll hear you.”
I turn toward them
“Wait. She’s kicked customers out before?”
No one answers.
I look at Jessica.
“You're a branch manager. That's all. Where do you get that kind of authority?”
The woman Jessica brought with her steps forward.
She looks me up and down, then curls her lips into a mocking smile.
“Sounds like someone’s jealous.”
“Our Jessica is Mrs. Cole. So what if she gets a little special treatment?”
“If that bothers you so much, maybe marry a man who owns a bank.”
Jessica gives the woman a light tap on the arm.
“Oh, Linda. Don’t.”
“What if she actually tries something with my husband?”
Linda looks me over again and snorts.
“Oh, come on.”
“Mr. Cole is crazy about you. Everybody knows that.”
She glances at me.
“Her? Don't make me laugh. Like Mr. Cole would ever go for some rude, trashy nobody like that.”
A few people nearby laugh.
“Exactly. Mr. Cole lets Jessica get away with everything.”
“Wouldn’t surprise me if she ended up running the place someday.”
“I heard he bought her a brand-new Porsche for her birthday.”
A brand-new Porsche?
Something clicks.
A few months ago, Gavin used one of my credit cards.
He told me he’d just closed a big business deal.
According to him, the client expected an expensive gift, so he bought a brand-new Porsche.
I believed him without a second thought.
Business gifts and client dinners were normal for us.
I never thought the whole deal was a lie.
The Porsche was a birthday present for his mistress.
I snap out of it.
Jessica has already knocked my bag off the counter.
“Get out. Don’t keep my client waiting.”
She looks at Linda.
“My client has a major transaction scheduled.”
“Her time is worth a lot more than yours.”
Linda walks over, bumps me aside.
“If you’re not here for anything important, move.”
I almost laugh.
Instead, I pull the transfer paperwork from my bag and slap it onto the desk.
“I have a ten-million-dollar wire scheduled.”
I look straight at Jessica.
“Is that important enough?”
The entire lobby falls silent.
第2章
Nobody says a word.
The ten million dollars comes from the sale of one of my father’s properties.
Dad told me to spend it on whatever I wanted.
He even offered to help me buy another property, but I turned him down.
I was going to move the money over to Gavin’s bank anyway. I figured it would help his numbers.
But after today, why would I leave a dime there?
Jessica is the first to laugh.
“Ten million?”
Linda follows.
“She has ten million dollars?”
I look at both of them.
A few employees exchange glances.
One of them whispers, “If she really had that kind of money, why would she be standing in the regular line?”
“She would’ve booked private banking.”
Jessica smiles.
“Exactly.”
Just then, a young bank employee hurries over, looking rattled.
“Jessica.”
“We do have a private banking appointment scheduled for today.”
“It’s for a ten-million-dollar transfer.”
“The last name is Sterling. Could it be—”
“Are you kidding me?” Jessica cuts her off.
“Someone like her couldn’t possibly have ten million dollars.”
“Check the client’s information again.”
“It can’t be her.”
The employee nods and hurries back to her desk.
I’m done wasting my time here. I’d rather go home and deal with Gavin myself.
I reach down to pick up my bag.
Jessica suddenly smacks my bag to the floor.
“You heard I was checking the client’s information, and now you’re trying to leave?”
“What, getting nervous now?”
The contents of my bag spill across the floor.
I frown.
“Is this how you treat your customers?”
“Do you have any idea how fast someone can get fired for behavior like this?”
“Fired?”
Jessica lets out a scoff.
“This is private banking, sweetheart. Do you even know where you are?”
“My husband is the bank’s president and CEO. He’s the one in charge.”
“So who exactly do you think is going to fire me?”
She gives my shoulder a little poke.
“That ten million is nothing but a lie you made up to show off.”
“You’re only trying to leave because you’re embarrassed.”
Then she notices something on the floor.
Her eyes narrow.
“What’s that?”
She crouches and picks it up.
My keychain.
She turns it over in her hand.
Then looks at me.
“Why do you have my husband’s keychain?”
“Where the hell did you get that? Tell me.”
It’s one half of a limited-edition matching set I had custom-made for Gavin and me.
Gold. Diamonds. One of a kind.
His is identical to mine.
I meet Jessica’s eyes and let out a cold laugh.
“I paid for it myself. Why do I have to explain myself to you?”
“You bought it?” Her face goes red. “Don’t lie to me. That’s my husband’s!”
“And even if it’s not the exact same one, it’s from the same damn matching set!”
She hurls it at my feet.
“So that’s what this is about!”
“You’ve been on my back all morning because you’re sleeping with my husband, haven’t you?”
“Walking into his office with his things, acting like you’ve done nothing wrong. What, you think I’m stupid?”
“This is exactly what you wanted, isn’t it? To get under my skin!”
The keychain hits the floor. Tiny diamonds scatter across the floor around my feet.
Her accusation is so ridiculous that I actually laugh.
I glance up at the security cameras mounted throughout the lobby.
Then I look straight back at Jessica.
“You know we’re on camera, right?”
My voice turns cold.
“You just damaged my property. And now you’re accusing me of provoking you?”
“Seriously?”
I pull out my phone.
“Fine. I’ll call the police.”
A scoff comes from the side.
Linda.
She’s been standing there the whole time, watching the argument like it’s some kind of show.
“The police?” she says, with a laugh.
She points down at the broken keychain.
“Jessica just damaged Mr. Cole’s property, and you’re the one threatening to call the cops?”
“If anyone has a reason to call the police, it’s him.”
Then her finger swings toward me.
“Please. Don’t act so innocent.”
“You’re nothing but his side piece. So know your place.”
Just then, the bank’s front doors swing open.
My mom walks in.
Linda’s last words carry across the lobby.
My mom stops cold.
“What did you just say?”
She looks straight at Linda.
“Who did you just call a side piece?”
第3章
Jessica immediately points at me.
“Who else would I mean?”
“Watch yourself around her. This woman is the shameless little bitch who’s been throwing herself at my husband.”
My mom blinks, clearly caught off guard.
“What? No, you’ve got it wrong. She could never—”
Jessica cuts her off.
“How could she not?”
Her voice rises.
“She’s nothing but a slut trying to get her hands on my husband!”
“And no wonder she was so eager to march straight into his office earlier!”
My mom’s face drains of color.
“Enough. Don’t you dare talk about my daughter like that.”
Jessica stares at her, then laughs.
“Your daughter?”
“She’s still a homewrecker. Just some shameless little tramp!”
Jessica raises her hand.
I barely have time to react and my mom lunges in front of me.
“Don’t touch my daughter!”
The slap cracks across my mom’s face.
She lets out a small gasp, then grabs her chest.
“Mom!”
I catch her before she can fall.
Jessica immediately steps back.
“She came at me! I didn’t touch her!”
Then she looks at me.
“So now you and your mom are ganging up on me?”
She looks between us, narrowing her eyes.
“Oh, please. You’re both putting on a show.”
“She’s faking it just to make me look bad.”
“Do you really think I’m stupid enough to fall for this?”
My mom can barely breathe.
I catch her before she collapses and ease her down onto the floor.
Her lips are already turning blue.
My heart drops.
My mom has a heart condition. She can’t handle stress like this.
“Mom! Mom, look at me. Are you okay?”
She looks like she’s in agony, but she can’t get a single word out.
Then I remember the medical cabinet near the entrance. There’s an AED inside.
I don’t even think. I get up and rush over.
Jessica grabs my arm.
“What the hell are you doing?”
“My mom has a heart condition, she needs the AED right now! This can’t wait, so get the hell out of my way!””
She pauses for half a second, then lets out a cold laugh.
“Absolutely not.”
I freeze for a second, then turn back to her.
“What?”
“That’s bank medical equipment. It’s for our customers.”
“She’s not a customer, is she?”
Jessica folds her arms.
“So why should she get to use our equipment?”
I can’t believe what I’m hearing.
“Are you fucking insane? She needs it! Who cares whether she banks here or not?”
“Well, it matters today.”
She smiles.
“My husband owns this bank. I can set whatever rules I want.”
I snap.
“You don’t get to decide who lives or dies!”
A weak, painful sound comes from my mom behind me.
“Mom!”
I turn toward her, then spin back to Jessica.
“Call 911, now! And get out of my way. I need the AED!”
Jessica doesn’t budge.
“No.”
She looks down at my mom with pure contempt.
“If you want to put on a show, take it outside. You’re not wasting our medical equipment.”
One of the employees looks nervously toward my mom.
“Jessica, she really doesn’t look okay. Her lips are turning blue.”
More employees start speaking up.
“Yeah. We should call 911.”
“She needs the AED!”
Jessica’s face hardens.
“I said stay out of it!”
“She’s faking it. Can’t you people see what she’s doing?”
She points at the employees.
“And anyone who gets involved can start looking for another job.”
“I’ll have my husband fire you. Go ahead. Try me.”
The employees immediately fall silent.
No one dares say another word.
My hands are shaking.
I pull out my phone and dial 911.
“My mother is having a medical emergency!”
“She has a heart condition! She can barely breathe!”
I give the dispatcher the branch address.
“Help is on the way,” she says.
Once the dispatcher hangs up, I start taking pictures.
The lobby.
Mom on the floor.
Jessica.
The AED cabinet.
Everyone standing around watching.
I get pictures of all of it.
Then I post everything online.
Jessica catches me in the act. She storms over.
“What are you doing?”
Before I can react, she snatches it from me.
“What the hell are you taking pictures of?”
She slams my phone onto the floor.
The screen goes black.
“Are you trying to make this bank look bad?”
“As long as I’m running this branch, you’re not going to drag us through the mud.”
“Delete those pictures.”
I stare at my broken phone.
For a second, I almost laugh.
Who exactly is making this bank look bad?
Then Jessica’s phone rings.
She looks at the screen, her whole attitude changes.
She answers at once.
“Hey, honey. When are you coming back?”
Gavin’s voice comes through the phone.
“Is everything okay? Did your client finish her transaction?”
Jessica’s face tightens. “I was just about to tell you.”
“I was helping Linda with her transfer.”
“Then a woman came in and refused to wait her turn. And she started yelling at me!”
“Gavin, come back. I’m seriously so pissed off right now.”
Gavin's voice softens. “Baby, forget about them.”
“They’re not worth getting worked up over. I’ll make it up to you.”
“How about that island trip you wanted? And I’ll get you that bag you liked.”
Linda, standing nearby, nudges Jessica.
“An island trip?”
“Wow! Mr. Cole really spoils you.”
A cold laugh escapes me. Then I walk straight toward Jessica.
“Gavin Cole.”
“You’ve got ten minutes.”
“Get your ass back here. Now!”
The other end falls completely silent.
