I Married His Rival Instead

On the day of my wedding, my fiancé and his groomsmen never showed up. My mom called him six times. Not a single call went through. Clutching my bridal bouquet, I tried to make excuses for him. "Traffic might be backed up. Let's wait a little longer." Right as the words left my mouth, the venue coordinator called. Her voice trembled with hesitation. "Miss Miller, Mr. Clark's side called. He said something urgent came up today, and the wedding needs to be pushed back to tomorrow." I froze for two seconds. "What urgent thing?" Silence hung on the line before she answered cautiously, "He told me to let you know that Penny took the news of his wedding very badly. He went to calm her down first." A bitter laugh escaped my lips. It turned out that in this meticulously planned wedding, I was the only outsider. "No need to cancel the wedding." I hung up, turned around, and looked toward the man sitting on the corner sofa. Julian Hayes. My childhood friend who had grown up beside me. I straightened my veil and walked straight toward him. "Julian, do you want to marry me?" The air in the bridal suite seemed to freeze solid. Julian's head snapped up. He rose so abruptly that his arm knocked over the floor lamp beside the sofa. "Chloe, do you have any idea what you're saying?" His voice was thick and raspy. I loosened my white-knuckled grip on the wilting bouquet and tossed it carelessly onto the table. "I know exactly what I'm saying." I looked into his eyes. "Sean isn't coming. But just because he walked away doesn't mean my wedding is off." Julian took a long stride toward me. "Chloe, you can't throw words like that around. Once you take this step, there is no turning back." "I don't want to turn back." I drew a sharp breath, turning to my completely stunned mother. "Mom, change the program. Update the guest list. Tell the officiant to put Julian Hayes's name down as the groom." My mom stood there shaking, the phone with Sean's unanswered calls still clutched in her hand. "Chloe, this... how can you do this? Marriage isn't a game! And what about Julian's family...?" I stepped over and gently took her cold hands into mine. "Mom, it's fine." I looked back at Julian. Without a second of hesitation, Julian pulled out his phone. "Mrs. Miller, leave the calls to me." He dialed his family, taking complete control of the crumbling ceremony. "It's Julian. Chloe's wedding is going ahead today. I am marrying her." He hung up, walked over, and reached out to gently fix my lopsided veil. "Thank you," I murmured, a sudden lump rising in my throat. I knew the truth. Julian had loved me for years. I had been blind back then, completely consumed by Sean's hot-and-cold attitude, taking Julian's steady devotion for granted as mere friendship. Now I saw it clearly. A man like Sean was nothing but pure trash. "Don't thank me." Julian looked down at me, the corners of his mouth curving into the faintest smile. "The honor is all mine." The ride to the ceremony venue was quiet. Only Julian's occasional instructions broke the silence as he guided the driver along alternate routes to dodge city traffic. Looking out at the flashing skyline, I felt an eerie sense of calm settle over my chest. Sean had bailed on me for Penny far too many times. The first time was Valentine's Day. He claimed he had emergency overtime and told me to grab dinner alone. An hour later, I saw Penny's post on SnapChat—a cozy photo of the two of them dining at a Michelin-star restaurant. The second time was the day we were supposed to get our marriage license at City Hall. He claimed Penny's car had broken down and he had to rescue her. I waited outside City Hall until the doors locked, and he never showed. Every single time, he had a mountain of righteous excuses. Every single time, I swallowed the pain and forgave him. I kept telling myself that Penny had no other friends, that Sean was just soft-hearted and had to look out for her. I had been pathetic. And today, his selfish games had ruined the most important moment of my life. If I didn't cut ties right now, I would spend the rest of my life trapped in their twisted melodrama, nothing more than a laughingstock. The car pulled up smoothly in front of the luxury hotel venue. Before I even got out, I spotted Sean's mother. Dressed in a gaudy dark red designer gown, she stood on the entrance steps, gossiping angrily with several relatives. When she saw me step out with Julian's arm wrapped firmly around mine, her jaw dropped, her eyes bulging with fury. "Chloe! What is the meaning of this?!" She stormed down the steps toward us like an enraged bull. "Sean already called to say the wedding was postponed! What kind of circus are you trying to pull here?"I stopped in my tracks and looked at this woman, who had spent years nitpicking everything I did. "You're quite well-informed, Mrs. Clark." She sneered, folding her arms over her chest. "Of course I am! Sean called me personally. Penny was rushed to the ER, and her condition is critical! The wedding had to be rescheduled!" "As his fiancée, how can you be so unreasonable? Why are you making a scene and demanding to hold it today?" "I'm unreasonable?" I didn't get mad. I actually laughed out loud at the pure absurdity of it all. "Sean abandoned his own wedding to hold another woman's hand, and I'm the one who's unreasonable?" "Penny is sick! She has nobody to take care of her! Sean went as a good friend, what's wrong with that?" She acted completely righteous, as if Sean leaving his bride at the altar to comfort his childhood friend was an act of saintly charity. "And who on earth are you holding onto?" She looked Julian up and down, her eyes dripping with disgust. "What is this? Are you trying to humiliate Sean by parading another man around?" The guests lingering outside began whispering among themselves. Without a word, Julian shifted his broad frame, stepping in front of me to shield me from the prying eyes. "Mrs. Clark, watch your mouth." His tone was icy. "Today is Chloe's and my wedding. It has nothing to do with Sean." Mrs. Clark stared at him as if he had lost his mind. "A wedding? Whose wedding?" She snapped back to me. "Who do you think you're marrying?" "If Sean didn't show up, did you really think I wouldn't get married?" I stepped out from behind Julian and looked her dead in the eye. "Sean canceled his part. I didn't cancel mine." "You... you are completely out of your mind! Sean told you he was caring for Penny! Why are you so petty? A good wife knows when to be understanding!" Spit flew from her lips, her manicured finger jabbing inches from my nose. "You're just jealous! You're jealous because Penny is prettier than you, sweeter than you, and knows how to be vulnerable! Sean had no choice, why must you make such a big deal out of it?" She pulled out her phone, desperate to call Sean to put me in my place. "Don't get cocky. I'm calling Sean right this second to come put you in your place!" The phone rang for a long time before someone finally picked up. "Hello? Mom! I'm busy right now, Penny just fell asleep. Whatever it is, tell me later!" Click. He hung up. Dead silence fell over the steps. Mrs. Clark stood frozen with her phone in the air, her face turning an exquisite shade of purple. This was the family I was supposed to marry into. This was my so-called future mother-in-law. "Did you hear that?" I asked quietly. "Your precious son told you to mind your own business." "This... this is definitely a misunderstanding!" She still tried to save face, her voice faltering. "Chloe, honey, look at what a mess this has become. Why don't we just reschedule? Wait until Sean comes back to explain everything..." "No need." I cut her off, giving her a radiant smile. "Mrs. Clark, you should run along and take care of your golden boy. After all, taking care of Penny is such an important duty—they couldn't possibly manage without you." With that, I looped my arm through Julian's and walked straight through the grand hotel doors without looking back. Behind us, Mrs. Clark's furious screeches echoed down the street. I couldn't care less. Inside, the venue was stunning, draped in hundreds of white and pink roses. While some guests looked bewildered, most quickly offered their warmest congratulations. After all, everyone in our circle knew Julian Hayes outclassed Sean Clark in every single aspect—wealth, character, and status. The music swelled. Julian held my hand as we walked slowly down the aisle. At the altar, the officiant was visibly nervous, clearing his throat before reciting the vows. "Chloe Miller, do you take Julian Hayes to be your lawfully wedded husband, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, until parted by death?"I looked into Julian's deep, dark eyes. They mirrored my reflection. Only me. "I do." "And Julian Hayes, do you take Chloe Miller to be your lawfully wedded wife..." "I do." When we exchanged rings, Julian's fingers trembled slightly. He carefully slid the temporary ring onto my left ring finger. Then, he leaned down and pressed a reverent kiss to the back of my hand. His warm touch sent a prickle of tears to my eyes. "Trust me, Chloe," he whispered against my skin. "From this day on, no one will ever make you feel second best again." The wedding reception lasted well into the night until the last guest was escorted out. My back ached and my feet were killing me. Collapsing onto the sofa in our luxury bridal suite, I didn't even want to move a muscle. Julian had the hotel staff bring up a warm soothing tea. After gently coaxing me to drink it, he knelt on the floor before me and began rubbing my tired calves. "I'm sorry," I murmured, staring down at the pattern on the carpet. "Today was so sudden. I dragged you into my reckless mess." His hands paused. "This wasn't a mess." His voice was gentle as silk. "This is the happiest day of my entire life." He looked up at me with utter sincerity. "The ring, the vows, our home—I will make sure you have the very best of everything. I've already had my assistant pull up listings for penthouses near your firm. We can tour them tomorrow, alright?" Seeing how ready he was to hand me the entire world on a silver platter, the lingering guilt in my chest dissolved, replaced by a deep, steady warmth. "Okay," I nodded. "But tonight... I need to stop by the apartment I shared with Sean to get my things." Sean had bought that condo. I had moved some of my belongings there—important documents, keepsakes, and personal essentials. I had spent weeks decorating it romantically for our wedding night. Now, it was just a sick joke. "I'll go with you." Julian stood up immediately, grabbing his car keys. We arrived at Sean's apartment building. The hallway was dark and chilly. I unlocked the door, and an unfamiliar scent drifted into the foyer. I frowned. I clicked on the lights. The living room appeared mostly tidy, but my eyes caught on the coffee table instantly. There sat my limited-edition tumbler. Inside was a murky dark liquid, and around the rim was a smeared stain of bright coral lipstick. Worse, the personalized sleeve had my initials embroidered onto it. Sean knew better than anyone that I had a strict aversion to people touching my personal items. Especially things that touched my lips. He had promised me countless times that no one else would ever lay a hand on my stuff. I walked over and picked up the cup. The sticky texture under my fingers made my stomach churn with disgust. I set it down and walked toward the sofa. One of the cushions was visibly squished. Empty snack wrappers littered the floor beneath it. And tangled right in the seam of the cushion was a long, curled strand of bleached blonde hair. I had naturally pin-straight, dark brunette hair. Sean had a buzz cut. That hair could only belong to Penny. Memories flashed in my head. Penny had an uncanny habit of crashing our dates. She copied my style, bought identical dresses, and wore the same perfume I used. Julian walked over. Seeing the mess on the table, his brow furrowed fiercely. He picked up the tumbler and dropped it straight into the trash can. "Filthy things belong in the garbage." He reached out and took my hand. "Come on. Let's get your stuff and get out of here." I wanted to escape this suffocating place as fast as possible. Yet when I pushed open the bedroom door, the sight before me hit me like a physical blow. The bed was trashed. The duvet was tossed in a tangled heap, the sheets wrinkled, stained with obvious, sickening spots. My eyes drifted to the nightstand drawer. The drawer was slightly ajar. My hands shook as I pulled it open. The full box of protection that had been sitting inside only had two wrappers left. My ears roared with a deafening ring. What happened here didn't need any explanation. Just a few hours ago, while I was waiting in my wedding dress, full of hope... Sean and Penny had been in this very bed, in our supposed marital home, completely unhinged. I grabbed the doorframe, feeling all the blood rush out of my face. A wave of violent nausea tore through my stomach. I sprinted into the bathroom and dry-heaved over the toilet. Julian rushed in behind me, rubbing my back and handing me a cup of water. "Are you okay?" I rinsed my mouth and looked at my ghostly reflection in the mirror. "I'm fine." Right then, my phone buzzed in my pocket. A SnapChat notification. From Penny. I opened it. It was a photo. In it, Penny was wearing an oversized men's dress shirt—Sean's shirt—snuggling against his bare chest. The caption read: Chloe, please don't get the wrong idea! Sean was just so exhausted, he asked me to keep him company while he rested. You know he can't get by without me taking care of him. The manipulation was practically oozing off the screen. In the past, I might have swallowed my tears, desperately confronted Sean, and ended up being gaslit into apologizing. Now? I found it laughable. My thumb swiped across the screen. Delete friend. I had never wanted to add her in the first place. Sean had whined that she was lonely, had social anxiety, and begged me to be patient with her. Once added, she clung to me like a parasite, dropping passive-aggressive hints just to prove she held the top spot in Sean's heart. The second I deleted her, the phone buzzed again. A text from Sean: Did you just delete Penny? What the hell is wrong with you? Another message popped up instantly: We already texted everyone that the wedding is postponed. Go post an announcement on your Snap story right now. Penny is feeling sick, she doesn't have the energy to deal with your petty drama. We're almost home. Make something light for dinner. Penny's stomach is upset, she can't eat anything greasy. What a pair of delusional clowns. Suddenly, a slender, masculine hand reached down and plucked the phone from my grip. Julian glanced at the screen, his face darkening with absolute rage. Without uttering a single word, his fingers danced across the glass. Block. Delete. Clean, ruthless, efficient. "Don't waste another second looking at trash like this," he said, handing the phone back to me, his voice laced with protective fury. "They don't deserve your attention." "Yeah." I took a deep breath, forcing my heart to steady. "Let's pack." I opened the closet and hauled down my luggage. I only took my legal documents and a few designer outfits that were untouched. Everything Sean had bought for me, and anything Penny had ever laid a hand on, I left behind. Just as Julian said: it was contaminated. "Chloe, what about this purse?" Julian pointed to a designer handbag on the shelf. "Leave it." Penny had once borrowed it without asking and spilled foundation all over the lining. "These heels?" "Trash." She had worn them out in the rain and ruined the leather soles. Once my suitcase was zipped, I took one last, cold look at the place I once dreamed would be my home. Just as we reached the front door, the lock clicked. Julian and I stopped in our tracks. Standing outside were Sean and Penny. Sean was holding a bag of medication from the pharmacy. When he saw the scene in front of him, he froze completely. His gaze darted between me, Julian, and the luggage in my hand. "Chloe? What do you think you're doing?" Penny peeked out from behind him, her voice sickeningly sweet. "Sean, what's going on? Is Chloe moving out?" I didn't even look at Penny. I wrapped my hand snugly around Julian's arm and met Sean's stunned stare head-on. "Let me introduce you. This is my new husband, Julian Hayes."
